(LPAC)— Singapore and Malaysia have announced plans for a high-speed rail link between Singapore and the Malaysian capital, with a target completion date of 2020. The link would reduce travel time between the two to 90 minutes. Trains currently take about six hours to make the 300-km (190- mile) journey between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak announced the links after talks in Singapore. The rail link was a "strategic development in bilateral relations that will dramatically improve" connectivity, their joint statement said. "Ultimately, this project will give both countries greater stakes in each other’s prosperity and success."

By road, the same journey takes about four hours, the BBC reported. This link is included in the 1997 EIR Special Report: The Eurasian-Land-Bridge-The ’New Silk Road’ ; it completes the high-speed route from Beijing in Northern China. [RON]
