Tsipras in Paris: The Issue Is Austerity And The Debt
22 May 2012
Greek Syriza party leader Alexis Tsipras at a press conference in Paris, once again reiterated that Greece’s rejection of the brutal memorandum is non-negotiable, the issue is the debt crisis, and that is a European wide crisis. At the press conference that followed his meeting with Left Front leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, he said "Greece is a sovereign country... There is nothing to negotiate in the memorandum, because you don’t negotiate with Hell... This is about negotiating not the memorandum, but the debt." He reiterated statements he has made in the last days including: "We are not at all an anti-European force. We are fighting to save social cohesion in Europe. We are maybe the most pro-European force in Europe, because its dominant powers will lead the Union into instability and the Eurozone to collapse if they insist on austerity," he is quoted Reuters as having said. He added that being part of Europe is not like renting a room in hotel and that Southern Europe is not a protectorate of the triple A-rated countries. When asked whether he saw comparison with Argentina, he said there were obvious comparisons, but the main difference was that Argentina has its own currency while Greece is part of the Eurozone, so it is not just a Greek crisis but a European crisis, demanding a European solution. In response to a question from Solidarité et Progrès whether Greece can have growth with austerity, as the Eurozone leaders are demanding, he replied that would be like having sunshine and rain at the same time. You can only have one or the other. Denouncing the memorandum, he said that no people can be forced to accept national suicide. The policy imposed on Greece has been an experiment in "neo-liberal policies" which is part of the fact that "finance capital has taken the control over the crisis against the European people." The problematic side of Syriza’s program is that it is part of the so-called European Left, which at this point is pushing for Eurobonds, and a Green agenda. Tsipras will be in Berlin today for one day to meet with Klaus Ernst and Gregor Gysi of Die Linke, and with the SPD. |
