Putin Warns of Unending Civil War in Syria If Assad Is Removed Unconstitutionally

Russian President Vladimir Putin, appearing at a joint press conference with visiting Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti in Moscow on July 23, warned the western allies of anti-Assad terrorists, that endless Afghan-type civil war in Syria would ensue if President Bashar al-Assad is removed unconstitutionally. "We fear that if the country’s current leadership is removed from power by unconstitutional methods, the opposition and today’s leadership could simply swap their places — the former become the leadership, the latter become the opposition. The civil war will then drag on for who knows how long," Putin said.

"The current Syrian leadership as well as the conflicting side, the so-called ’armed opposition,’ must find strength and organize a negotiation process, to tune it so that a mutually acceptable compromise for the country’s future could be reached," Putin told reporters. He pointed out that "structural changes" in government should only come after the fighting stops and constitutional changes are negotiated.

Emphasizing that Russia does not want the development of a protracted process of conflict, the Russian President said, "We do not want the situation to evolve along the bloody scenario of a civil war that will continue endlessly, as in Afghanistan." He reiterated his faith in the power of the United Nations. "The agreements reached in the UN on extending the UN mission, testify to the fact that, despite certain differences in defining what is primary and what is secondary, compromises can be found on the UN floor and a settlement can be reached among all sides for the common good and the benefit of the Syrian people," he added.
