In an interview with Israel’s TV Channel 2 on July 28, Shaul Mofaz, Israel’s former defence minister and the leader of its main opposition party, Kadima, warned of the "catastrophic" consequences of a possible Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. "We need to ask ourselves... two questions," Mofaz said.
"Will an early attack by Israel change Iran’s strategic situation regarding the nuclear program? My answer is: no. And the second question is, will an early strike by Israel, in the current circumstances, in the existing situation in the Middle East... will an early attack lead to war?" Mofaz questioned. "My answer is that the probability for this is very high," he stated. He declared that Kadima wanted no part in operational adventures planned by Netanyahu, which he said would endanger Israelis. He pointed out that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is engaged in "manipulative" posing of a nuclear Iran as an "existential threat" to Israel.
On July 23, Mofaz, who had led the Kadima party out of the governing coalition the previous week, declared that "Kadima will not set out on operational adventures that will endanger the future of our young women and young men and the future of the citizens of Israel in the State of Israel."
