- After two days of extensive negotiations with a cross-section of opposition groups, including students from the January 25th Movement, and representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood, Vice President Omar Suleiman issued a statement late Sunday, Feb. 6th, summarizing the consensus that had been reached, and the steps now being taken to implement the reforms. The three-part communiqué emphasized the transition to new elections, under a modified constitution, in which the election of the President would not be in the hands of the People’s Assembly; and the support for the Court of Cassation’s (Egypt’s highest judicial body) rulings on the challenges to the November 2010 parliamentary elections. The communiqué further announced a full investigation into corruption and the violent attacks on demonstrators last week, and the creation of a "national follow-up committee" to monitor the implementation of all the agreements. The communiqué praised the youth who led the protests, and the Armed Forces for their "patriotic and loyal role at this sensitive time."
