China’s Opens World’s First Electromagnetic Propulsion Test Facility

Printable version / Version imprimable

EIRNS—The new facility in the Jinan Innovation Zone of Shandong Province, is capable of accelerating objects up to very high speeds, including those of over one ton, up to 1,030 kmh. Unlike other similar facilities, this one uses new state-of-the-art electromagnetic propulsion technology, which allows for more precise and sensitive measurements than the standard rocket-driven technology. The project was the result of collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is definitely a breakthrough in this field. The facility will be able to test aerodynamics, high-strength materials, and the operation of sensors in super-speed conditions for all kinds of ground and air vehicles. [slb]
