Russia Bring Satellite Jammer and Stealth Fighters On Line

6 July 2018

EIRNS—The panoply of new weapons systems that the Russians, from President Vladimir Putin on down, have been touting, includes one that has not received a lot of attention but could be as important as Russia’s hypersonic weapons. In a roundup of systems that mostly are already known, RT includes something called the Tirada-2s, a systems designed to jam satellite communications. "Such technologies, which effectively render the satellites useless, make it difficult for any potential enemy to bypass the jamming and de facto leaves them without any modern communication tools," RT reports. "Eventually, it can significantly shift the balance in modern combat activities, which are increasingly characterized by rapid changes of environment and high requirements for troops’ adaptability, in which communication plays a vital role." The Tirada -2s is clearly designed to exploit a well known U.S. military vulnerability: it’s heavy dependence on satellite communications and surveillance.

Closer to earth, the Russian Defense Ministry is coming closer to bringing into service the Su-57 stealth fighter. Last week, the Russian Defense Ministry signed a contract with the builder for the first production contract, a lot of twelve aircraft. While that’s a small number, it’s obvious that the Russian Defense Ministry doesn’t intend to limit itself to those few aircraft. Vladimir Gutenev, a member of State Duma’s expert panel on the aviation industry, told Sputnik that the Su-57,
while comparable to the F-22 and the F-35, is also a lot cheaper. He also noted that four Su-57 fighters were tested in battle during the anti-terrorist operation in Syria. "The time our four Su-57 aircraft spent in Syria definitely allowed us to get additional information on this aircraft’s ability to detect [using communications systems] US F-22 and F-35 aircraft which are operating in the same airspace," Gutenev stated.

The Russian military is also in the final stages of perfecting the R-37M long range air-to-air missile for the Su-57, as well as the Su-35S and Mig-31 interceptors. It’ll reportedly have a range of 300 km and a speed of Mach 6. The closest American-made equivalent, the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile, is reported by wikipedia to have a maximum range of 180 km at a speed of Mach 4.
