EIRNS—In a Sept. 23 letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, more than 500 of the world’s leading scientists declare that “There is no climate emergency.” The letter grew from the Petition on Anthropogenic Global Warming delivered to Italian government agencies by leading Italian scientists in June 2019, then circulated throughout Europe and the U.S. More scientists continue to add their names. The letter will be presented in a press conference in Oslo on Oct. 18. It will also be presented in a room in the Italian Senate, hopefully connected with Oslo. The letter reads: Your Excellencies, There is no climate emergency. A global network of more than 500 knowledgeable and experienced scientists and professionals in climate and related fields have the honor to address to Your Excellencies the attached European Climate Declaration, for which the signatories to this letter are the national ambassadors. The general-circulation models of climate on which international policy is at present founded are unfit for their purpose. Therefore, it is cruel as well as imprudent to advocate the squandering of trillions of dollars on the basis of results from such immature models. Current climate policies pointlessly, grievously undermine the economic system, putting lives at risk in countries denied access to affordable, continuous electrical energy. We urge you to follow a climate policy based on sound science, realistic economics and genuine concern for those harmed by costly but unnecessary attempts at mitigation. We ask you to place the Declaration on the agenda of your imminent New York session. We also invite you to organize with us a constructive high-level meeting between world-class scientists on both sides of the climate debate early in 2020. Such a meeting would be consistent with the historically proven principles of sound science and natural justice that both sides should be fully and fairly heard. Audiatur et altera pars! [Listen to the other side.] Please let us know your thoughts how we bring about such a momentous joint meeting. Yours sincerely, Ambassadors of the European Climate Declaration Professor Guus Berkhout—Netherlands, Emeritus Professor of Geophysics, Delft University of Technology, Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Professor Richard Lindzen—U.S.A., Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, MIT, Professor Reynald Du Berger—Canada, Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at the L’Université du Québec a Chicoutimi Professor Ingemar Nordin—Sweden, Emeritus Professor Philosophy of Science, Linköping University Terry Dunleavy—New Zealand, MBE, co-founder (2006) and honorary secretary, New Zealand Climate Science Coalition Jim O’Brien—Republic of Ireland, Chair, Irish Climate Science Forum, Expert Reviewer IPCC AR6 Viv Forbes—Australia, Geologist with Special Interest in Climate, Founder of Carbon Sense Coalition, Queensland Professor Alberto Prestininzi—Italy, Professor of Practical Geology, Università di Roma La Sapienza; previously, Scientific Editor in Chief Italian Journal of Engineering Geology and Environment and Director of the Center for Forecast Research, Prevention, and Control of Geological Threats (Centro di Ricerca Previsione e Controllo Rischi Geologici—CERI), Università di Roma La Sapienza Professor Jeffrey Foss—Canada, Professor of Philosophy of Science, University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C.
